Industry Insights With Media Maven Major

Major, PR Director and Owner of Major Snacks

Productive is an understatement when describing Chauniqua Major - Louis, who goes by the more appropriate moniker Major. When she isn’t running the Orlando public relations department of a top Florida-based PR firm, Major shares insights on her own blog at Major Creates and runs a successful organic popcorn business - Eat Project Pop (it is addictive in a way that you don’t feel guilty as its organic AND vegan!).

Purpose is her passion. The PR vet has been in the industry for a decade, helping brands tell their stories in the most unique way possible. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know her on a personal level, her drive and outlook are both inspiring and invigorating. With that said, I decided to sit her down to share some of the major jewels that comes with knowing this creative.

Tell me a little about your experience in the PR industry and how you got to where you are today?

I went to school at UCF and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations. I completed nine internships during college (don’t ask me how that was even possible) and started my career approximately six or seven months after graduation.

At my core, I’m a consumer-lifestyle publicist.I lead that office as the director of Central Florida Operations. Our clients range from nonprofit to retail tech, which keeps us on our toes every single day.

What are some of the qualities/skills you look for in a potential candidate?

Initiative is everything to me. Skills can be taught, but someone must desire to obtain and maintain a level of initiative that will separate them from the pack. A strong communications pro is always on the lookout for new opportunities, and they have to be willing to go the extra mile without being asked to do so.

What is the best advice you can give to someone who is looking to join your industry?

Take time to be sure this in the industry you’d like to go into. There are perks to becoming a publicist, but people oftentimes don’t have a full understanding of what we do. Complete multiple internships, ask publicists out for coffee to ask questions, and consider the entire marketing spectrum before jumping into PR.

Are there any resources you suggest those joining the industry should take advantage of?

Listen to podcasts, research videos on YouTube, invest in a webinar, and take PR pros out to coffee to learn. You will quickly learn lessons, gain insights, and obtain knowledge that can change the trajectory of your career.

What is your Ki Takeaway from your professional career?

Don’t make decisions without having a peace of mind and always take initiative.
